Val's bringing hope to Europe's poorest
Friday, December 05, 2008, 16:22

A TIRELESS charity worker has delivered an early Christmas present to poverty- stricken areas of Eastern Europe.
Val Newton, of Wales Romanian Aid, has just returned from her 110th charity trip, this time delivering more than 10 tonnes of rice and pasta collected in South West Wales.
And Val said the response from people across the region had been worth her efforts.
"The mothers or grandmothers of the families came up to me to say 'thanks again' with tears brimming in many eyes," she said.
"There are hundreds of families that do not have enough food or aid. They are very deprived and it shouldn't be happening in Europe."

"We collected 570 banana boxes full and I would like to say thank you to everyone who donated," she said.
"I would also like to thank the young people and children through their harvest festivals at schools, churches or chapels for their contributions. Some of them even came back to my house up to 30 miles from school to help me unload my van."
Some £2,000 was also raised by kind- hearted supporters to help transport the load to Romania and Moldova.
The 10-day trip last month saw Val visiting many villages, towns and cities between Romania and Moldova, dropping off the food parcels to families in need.
She said she met one family from Romania living in appalling conditions, and gave them food to help over Christmas.
"They all have nothing for Christmas. They have rice and pasta and a small amount of vegetables, but they will not have any meat or cheese," she said.
"Their ceiling is made out of mud and there is mud on the floor.
"I want to organise some toys for the children for Christmas."
Anyone who wants to help should send cheques, made payable to Wales Romanian Aid, to Val Newton at Tycroes, Maesybont, Cross Hands, Llanelli SA14 7HD or call 01269 843345.
